Naked Awareness

Art Exhibit at ArtSpace
August 3 – September 4

Nude with Red Robeby Rod Williams

El Dorado Arts Council ArtSpace invites visitors to appreciate the masterful art works exhibited in Naked Awareness, showing August 3 – Sept 4 at ArtSpace.

Spotlight on local artist Sandy Allie

One of the featured artists is sculptor Sandy Allie, who lives and works in El Dorado Hills. In addition to her classical art training with strong emphasis on the human figure, Allie has studied with many prominent artists at professional workshops given throughout the United States. She has studied museum collections, architecture and sculpture in France and Italy, as well as participating in stone carving workshops and symposiums in Italy and Costa Rica. Allie's subject matter deals exclusively with the human figure.

Drawing inspiration from the broken fragments of antiquity as well as the great masters of the Renaissance and Romantic periods, Allie has developed a signature of her own that seeks to represent the introspective, emotional and expressive side of humanity. "The language of the body tells the story if you take your time to look into it, ponder, and discover the subtle truths hiding within. This is where truth lies. It may be beautiful; perhaps it is not. This is the honesty I want my sculptures to convey.

Bronze Victoire Main by Sandy Allie

Allie enjoys working directly from life in her favorite medium, water based clay. "While working with a model, I attempt to bring out the qualities I feel make this individual special. Often, the personality of the sculptures comes from working many hours with an individual and the energy he or she brings to the work. Later, long after the model has left the studio, the sculpture and I become free to begin our dialogue; this is when I sculpt my response to the pose and how it makes me feel. Characteristics like crooked fingers on weathered hands or the graceful contour of a fleshy hip are things I might emphasize or exaggerate. At some point, the sculpture takes on its own personality and I realize I am no longer in charge. This is a wonderful and exciting time. From there it becomes my challenge to listen to the sculpture and allow the medium to tell my hands what to do."

Allie has taught bronze casting as well as molding and casting at Lake Tahoe Community College. Although she considers terra cotta "a delicious and noble medium", she often translates "her studies" to bronze. "I believe it is important to the integrity of the original artwork that the artist is knowledgeable and physically involved with, or, at best oversees, every step in the many processes of casting a bronze sculpture, from mold to patina. I have experienced the thrill of casting many of my own bronze sculptures which makes the work very personal."

Naked Awareness is a month long art exhibit presented by El Dorado Arts Council ArtSpace from August 3 – Sept 4, 2010. This dynamic theme is inspired by the nude human form and its representation in art. El Dorado Arts Council ArtSpace will be hosting a lecture/slide show by sculptor Sandy Allie on the Nude in Art (7/24 @ 7pm); exhibiting sculptures, photography, and paintings by local artists of the nude; and EDAC Movie Night showing the documentary “Naked World” of the photography of Spencer Tunick (8/6 @ 6:30pm).

El Dorado Arts Council invites visitors to come appreciate the masterful art works exhibited in Naked Awareness. We are located at 459 Main Street

The Arts License Plate

Despite the importance of the arts, California is 50th out of the 50 states in per capita arts funding. We spend about 12¢ per person. In contrast, the state of New York spends $2.58 and Massachusetts spends $1.96 per person. (National Assembly of State Arts Agencies).

If a million California cars had Arts License Plates, there would be $40 million for the arts in California.
