Poetry Out Loud!
Poetry Out Loud is a national competition at the high school level that encourages memorization and recitation of great poetry. It is funded nationally through the National Endowment for the Arts and The Poetry Foundation, and locally this year through a Women’s Fund impact grant to El Dorado Arts Council. In 2012 eight or more El Dorado County high schools will be hold their own competitions and then send their winners to our county finals. The El Dorado County winner will proceed to the California state finals in March; the national competition will be held in April in Washington, D.C.
Invitation to participate as a judge or tabulator:
We would like to invite members of the community who are interested in literature and poetry to consider being a judge for one of the high school finals, which will be held in late January 2012. The total time commitment for a judge is about 6 to 8 hours and includes a training session, reading through the poems and assessing their difficulty, and judging one high school competition according to the national rubric. Those with a head for numbers are invited to participate as tabulators to add up scores. Training sessions are held at ArtSpace, 459 Main Street in Placerville on these dates:
- Friday, December 9, 2:00-4:00 p.m.
- Tuesday, December 13, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
- Wednesday, December 14, 2-3 p.m. (tabulators only)
- Thursday, January 5, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
- Thursday, January 12, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Choose one training date and reserve your spot by emailing poleldo@gmail.com. We will communicate dates and times for the finals via email to those who have completed the training.
Invitation to attend the county finals:
County finals will be held on Tuesday, February 7 from 7-9pm at Imagination Theater, located at the county fairgrounds in Placerville. Watching our county’s young people perform is impressive and inspiring. This event is free and open to the public.
